    Parshat Vayikra
    (From Leviticus)

    Weekly Gilayon (5761)

    # Lev. 2:13: "You shall season your every offering of meal with salt ... with all your offerings you must offer salt." Rabbi Moses Hefetz, Melekhet Mahashevet:

The end of the verse gives the reason for its beginning, to offer on the altar of the L-rd something that is proper and customary for the table of flesh-and-blood, for a sacrifice that is not salted will not be placed on an ordinary table. The L-rd accordingly commanded, "You shall season your every offering of meal with salt," since you season with salt all your sacrifices and food for your table.

How does Rabbi Moses Hefetz differ in his commentary from all the interpretations that we have read above?

    From the Answers

    E. In the view of Rabbi Moses Hefetz, the meaning of the words "with all your offerings you must offer salt" is: because on all your foods you put salt. Consequently, this is a causal clause for the main clause: "You shall season your every offering of meal with salt." He differs from the other commentators in that he does not relate to the wording "your covenant with G-d" as the reason for the salting. He thus regards the second part of the verse as referring, not to the sacrifice, but to the practice of people when they eat.
